Resolve Maritime Academy provides DP Induction and Simulator training courses in accordance with the OSVDPA Scheme.

The Induction Course is offered for Prospective DPO’s from the following segments: Offshore, Cruise, Military. The Induction course is predominantly theory-based with guided practical exercises that introduce the trainee to various DP operational modes. The practical elements of this course entail the use of a DP system installed in the training center and provide an adequate level of simulation. This equipment meets the requirements of the OSVDPA “DYNAMIC POSITIONING OPERATOR TRAINING SCHEME ACCREDITATION STANDARD”. Considering the equipment available for the DP Induction Course, the maximum number of participants is 8.

Objectives

A trainee who successfully completes the DP Induction course will enter the OSVDPA Dynamic Positioning Operator’s Training Scheme and will:

  • Have acquired knowledge of the principles of DP
  • Have acquired a basic understanding of how to set up a DP system
  • Have an understanding of the practical operation of associated equipment, including position Reference Systems
  • Be able to recognize the various alarm, warning and information messages
  • Be able to relate the DP installation to the ship system, including (but not limited to) power supply, maneuvering facility, available position reference systems and nature of work
  • Be able to relate DP operations to the existing environmental conditions of wind, sea state, current/tidal stream and vessel movement

Entry Standards: As the scheme owner, the OSVDPA sets and singularly enforces the entry requirements for Prospective DPOs. Below, is a summary of the entry requirements and procedures

More information can be found in Section 16 of (the OSVDPA Manual of Policies and Procedures (Version_003).pdf) Entry Requirements. As specified in Section 16.4, the OSVDPA shall allow entry to the holders of the following credentials (or academic attendance):

  2. A non-STCW certificate of competency issued by the United States Coast Guard, or an equivalent certificate issued by another White List Maritime Administration as listed in the STCW Convention,
  3. An STCW credential as Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (II/4 or II/5),
  4. An Able Bodied Seaman serving on a 200 GRT Near Coastal vessel having a certificate of completion from a U.S. Coast Guard Approved Ratings Course, or
  5. A Cadet enrolled in a qualified Maritime Academy (See Section 16.4.4).

If the OSVDPA finds the Prospective DPO meets all requirements, the OSVDPA shall provide the Prospective DPO an admissions letter. A copy of the admissions letter must be provided to Resolve Maritime Academy in order to enroll in Phase 1 (Induction) Course.

The Simulator Course provides advanced DP training to Masters, Chief Engineers & Deck/Engine/ETO’s ship’s officers to a standard adequate to fulfill the requirements of the industry, and of the various bodies and institutions involved. This course provides participants with further insight, experience, and confidence in performing offshore operations under DP control, as well as, to be familiar with and observe the rules and regulations under which such operations should be performed, according to OSVDPA, national and international authorities. Training is predominantly practical operational in nature. Exercises and case studies compose the major part of the course. In addition to exercise briefing/debriefing, students are given the opportunity to give feedback on their training needs during classroom instruction. Considering that the course is intended for officers who already have a good grounding in the practice and principles of dynamic positioning through their experiences in class and at sea, the DP Simulator course is intended to build on that experience and to provide some realistic DP-based scenario work. These scenarios provide the opportunity to practice all aspects of the planning and conduct of typical DP operations, including alarm recognition and the handling of emergencies. Particular emphasis is placed upon teamwork within the role-play scenarios. The maximum number of participants is 6.

Objectives

  • Carry out operational planning, risk assessment, and hazard identification tasks
  • Set up the DP system for a particular task
  • Operate the communications
  • Analyze the trends
  • Discuss systems failures
  • Decide on courses of action because of systems failures
  • React to alarms and printer readout
  • Initiate DP Alert status alarms
  • React to all events occurring
  • Operate the desk under normal and pressured conditions
  • Practice effective teamwork

Apply the lessons learned to date

Entry Standards: This course is open to any Certified Deck or Engineer Officer who already follows the OSVDPA DP Operator’s Certification Scheme and is a holder of a valid DP Basic/Induction course certificate issued by any Training Center accredited by the OSVDPA and a Dynamic Positioning Training Logbook properly completed.
