This program consists of assessments with instructions and guidance. Students taking this program should be well versed in the knowledge base required for the RFPNW to insure success!

Any applicant who has successfully completed the Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch Assessment (MIDATL-412) course will satisfy;

The training requirements of 46 CFR 12.605(a)(3) for an STCW endorsement as Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch
The following practical assessments performed during this course have been determined to be equivalent of National Assessment Guidelines Tasks, as documented in NVIC 06-14 Guidelines On Qualification for STCW Endorsements as Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch:

1.1.A, 1.1.B, 1.1.C, 1.2.A, 1.2.B, 1.2.C, 1.2.D, 1.2.E, 1.2.F, 1.2.G, 1.2.H, 1.2.I, 1.3.A, 1.3.B, 2.1.A, 2.1.B, 2.1.C, 3.1.A, 3.2.A, 3.3.A, 3.3.B, 3.4.A, 3.4.B, 3.5.A, 3.5.B, 3.6.A, and 3.6.B

Applicants who have successfully completed this course need not present completed Task Control Sheets for these assessments in application for STCW certification.

Regulations II/4 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended (STCW) contains the requirements for a deck rating to be issued an STCW certificate as a rating forming part of a navigational watch (RFPNW). An ordinary seaman assigned to either the deck department or the maintenance department who either stands navigational watches, or may be assigned to stand navigational watches, must also be qualified as a RFPNW. This course will meet the requirements for:

Competence:
Steer the ship and also comply with helm orders in the English language

Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency:

Use of magnetic and gyro-compasses
Helm orders
Change-over from automatic pilot to hand steering and vice versa

Competence:
Keep a proper look-out by sight and hearing

Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency:

Responsibilities of a look-out, including reporting the approximate bearing of a sound signal, light or other object in degrees or points

Competence:
Contribute to monitoring and controlling a safe watch

Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency:

• Shipboard terms and definitions
• Use of appropriate internal communication and alarm systems
• Ability to understand orders and to communicate with the officer of the watch in matters relevant to watchkeeping duties
• Procedures for the relief, maintenance and handover of a watch
• Information required to maintain a safe watch
• Basic environmental protection procedures
