The Approved Engine Course 2 (AEC 2) is a five-day MCA course that builds on AEC 1 and forms the second stage of the Small Vessel engineering pathway. It develops the skills required to support the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of machinery aboard modern motor yachts and other small commercial vessels. The course is a key requirement for progression toward the 2nd Engineer Officer qualification under the newly defined Small Vessel (SV) route, which applies to yachts, tugs, fishing vessels, seismic survey vessels and other craft under 3000 GT and below 9,000 kW.

AEC 2 strengthens practical engineering competence, fault-finding ability, and planned maintenance skills, while also reinforcing the safety, record-keeping, and operational responsibilities expected of a junior or assistant engineer.
