Target group

People who wish to work on board a seagoing vessel must have a Basic Training certificate.

Prior education

Valid seagoing medical certificate. You must be able to swim.

Contents of the course

The training consists of the Personal Survival Techniques, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting modules. The following subjects are covered:

  • Survival techniques.
  • Fire safety and fire fighting.
  • First aid in the event of an accident.
  • Working safely.
  • Social responsibilities.

The following practical lessons are given:

  • Practising with personal and group life-saving equipment.
  • Maintenance of safety materials.
  • Fire drills with fire fighting equipment/compressed air and the use of the compulsory fire extinguishers.
  • Practising emergency procedures.
  • First aid and resuscitation.

Duration

4 days.

Lesson times: 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Certification

If participants pass the final exam, they are awarded an official (ILenT/Scheepvaart approved) STCW'78, as amended, certificate and the seaman's book is stamped. STC B.V. is recognized by the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport) under the institute code NL007.

For the certificate to remain valid, participants must have one year of sailing time during a period of five consecutive years.

Remarks

The parts of the course which are difficult or cannot be trained on board a ship must be repeated every 5 years. The Advanced Fire Fighting refresher course is given by STC B.V either separately or in combination with other refresher courses.

To be brought to the lessons: swimwear, overalls or old clothing and waterproof clothing.

To be sent prior to starting the course: a passport photograph (with name and date of birth written on the back), a seagoing medical certificate (physical examination) and a copy of the participant's personal information from the municipal personal records database or an enlarged photocopy of their passport.

It is important that we receive the required documents in time, otherwise it will not be possible for us to issue a certificate.
