Upon completion of the HELM course candidates will be able to control the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the management level through the use leadership and managerial skills to:
- Allocate duties and inform the crew about expected level of work standards and behavior in an appropriate manner;
- Base training objectives and activities on the assessment of current competence and capabilities of the crew;
- Plan operations and allocate resources in correct priority to perform the necessary tasks;
- Ensure clear and unambiguous communication;
- Demonstrate effective leadership behavior;
- Ensure that team members have an accurate understanding of current and predicted vessel state and operational status as well as an external environment;
- Verify that all decisions are most effective for the respective situation
