Candidates’ knowledge is assessed throughout the course to prepare them for the IAMI written examination for this module. The examination is a 2.5 hour written examination consisting of 4 questions and requires 65% marks to pass. This module does not require a course completion certificate to sit the examination.
Classroom theory sessions with practical exercises on navigational calculations.
This course is designed to prepare candidates for their Master (Yacht) – Celestial Navigation module written examination and covers the following topics:
- Determine the compass error by celestial observation.
- Fix position by observation of celestial bodies.
- Determine latitude by celestial observation.
The aim is to ensure that candidates are able to fix the ships’ position and determine compass error using celestial observations so that they can conduct ocean passages without the need for GNSS. Knowledge and use of Sextant is covered in this course in detail which will assessed during MCA Oral examination.
Candidates are recommended to study the course notes prior to attending the course. These notes can be provided to candidate upon request and after confirmation of booking.
