The theory portion of this course is delivered on NEMO°, our learning management system with final exams administered on the USCG approved HALO Exam software.
Two days of practical assessments are required at Northeast Maritime Institute and its partner fire training academy.
- First Aid/CPR
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Basic Fire Fighting
Students are asked to bring a bathing suit and towel for pool exercises.
During the Basic Firefighting Practical of the course, students will be attending the CT Fire Academy. They will be in charge of finding their own transportation.
Under the terminology of the STCW Convention, Basic Safety Training is made up of the above four courses. Any applicant who has successfully completed the 24-hour Basic Safety Training Refresher course will be considered to have demonstrated continued proficiency in Basic Safety Training, provided that they have been previously issued an STCW 95 certificate.
For some, Basic Safety Training, which meets STCW Requirements, is required for hiring reasons to meet some insurance requirements.
