This MCA-recognised certification qualifies you to captain motor yachts up to 200 gross tons and operate up to 150 nautical miles offshore. It’s accepted by major flag states and insurers for commercial yacht operations worldwide.
Pathway to Senior Command Roles
The certificate opens doors to positions such as Captain, Relief Skipper, Officer of the Watch (up to 500GT), or Delivery Captain on both private and commercially coded vessels. It also serves as the essential step toward the IYT Master of Yachts Unlimited for unlimited ocean command.
Career Progression & Salary Impact
- Bosun → Master (200 GT, 150 NM offshore): +$3,800
- Lead Deckhand → Chief Mate (<500 GT, 150 NM offshore): +$3,000
- Bosun → OOW (<500 GT, all oceans): +$3,500
- Earning Potential:

Entry Requirements
Minimum Age: 18 years old
Practical Experience: Adequate time at the helm of a sailboat or twin-screw power vessel
Sea Service Requirements:
3,000 nm logged (not day trips; must be genuine voyages)
2,000 nm in coastal waters
50 days at sea (24 hrs = 1 day)
30 hrs night watch underway (6 hrs as captain or watch leader)
All sea time must be verified and signed by a skipper (self-signed requires independent confirmation)
Knowledge: Working understanding of COLREGs and coastal navigation on paper charts
Medical: Valid medical/physical certificate with eyesight and color vision test
Communication: VHF or Radio Operator Certificate
Safety Training: Valid MCA-approved STCW Basic Training (2010) required before CoC issuance
Candidates without valid STCW can complete/update training alongside the MoY course (additional fees)
VHF Certification: Candidates without an SRC can prepare online and complete the exam during training (additional fees)
