Overview

This is an MCA approved practical training course required by all deck ratings wishing to progress to the rank of Able Bodied Seaman. It's also a mandatory requirement for the issue of an Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

• Six months seagoing service in a deck capacity; AND
• Valid medical certificate; AND
• Four basic STCW 95 certificates (firefighting, first aid, PST,PSSR); AND
• Watchkeeping / steering certificate.

• General Practical Seamanship Duties.
• Handling and Splicing of Wire and Rope.
• Anchoring and Mooring.
• Cargo Hatches.
• Rigging Gangways, Pilot Ladders and a Bosun's Chair.
• Enclosed Spaces.
• Understanding of Code of Safe Working Practice.

Using a combination of practical bench work, interactive activities and multimedia.
